"Taking a tour of Alcatraz the next morning so looked for reasonable priced hotel close by. Normally stay at Choice Hotels but too expensive in the area, found Van Ness Inn through hotels.com and read the reviews and decided to try it out. (Rented through Van Ness site though) Staff was friendly. The beds were very comfortable, the rooms are small but clean. Rooms have fridge and microwave. We are vegan and brought our own breakfast, so not sure what they offered. We walked down to the bay, about 4 blocks away and towards Fisherman's Wharf, could hear the sea lions. Only concern we had was parking is free but not a lot of it. Some cars were double parked. In the morning it only took us about 8 minutes to drive to Pier 33. Warning, parking around Pier 33 is about $25/day."
