San Francisco, California, attracts millions of visitors each year and is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This city is thriving with culture, world-class dining, outdoor adventures, live entertainment, museums, stunning architecture and breathtaking views. With majestic vistas, rolling hills and famous landmarks, San Francisco is home to dozens of attractions. During your stay, be sure to visit the infamous Lombard Street – the most crooked street in the world.

Lombard Street

Popular among tourists and commonly referred to as “The World’s Most Crooked Street,” Lombard Street in San Francisco, California, is a must-see. Lombard Street, in full, stretches east to west from The Presidio to The Embarcadero is approximately 12 blocks long and is signed as part of the original U.S. Route 101. However, the 600 foot, brick paved, one-block section next to Russian Hill neighborhood is what draws the most attention. Eight sharp turns zig-zag through the neighborhood where guests can either drive, or walk, down for an interesting adventure.

The unique design was introduced by property owner Carl Henry in an attempt to reduce the hill’s natural 27 percent grade, which was a challenge too steep for most vehicles. Built in 1922, the curved road has proven to be successful for a variety of reasons. Typically, this segment of Lombard Street sees approximately 250 vehicles per hour. Avoid long waits and long lines by visiting during non-peak hours (early morning, late evening). The street is available 24 hours a day.
Nearby Lombard rests The Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge/Park, Pier 39 on the Wharf at The Embarcadero, and hundreds of local diverse restaurant gems. There is never a dull moment in San Francisco, and always something to explore.
