San Francisco, California, attracts millions of visitors each year and is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. This city is thriving with culture, world-class dining, outdoor adventures, live entertainment, museums, stunning architecture, and breathtaking views. With majestic vistas, rolling hills and famous landmarks, San Francisco is home to dozens of attractions. During your stay, be sure to visit Boudin Bakery.

Visit Boudin Bakery

If exploring the city leaves your stomach grumbling, look no further to satisfy an appetite and the senses than Boudin Bakery in Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Open daily from 8:00 AM until 9:00 PM, Boudin Bakery offers visitors hourly docent-lead and self-guided tours of the bakery filled with endless facts about the art of breadmaking, San Francisco migrant history, floor-to-ceiling views of the bakers at work, artisans crafting their dough into creative, made-to-order shapes, and the sweet, mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked sourdough bread.

When you arrive, meet with your docent who will greet you with a friendly smile, and introduce you to the wonderful world of breadmaking and sourdough. Learn about the migrants who traveled to San Francisco and found fortune in bread, rather than mining for gold, and how their sourdough helped to shape the city and enrich not only their lives but the lives of millions. Docents will also explain a fascinating culinary history specific to San Francisco - and all of the creative cuisines that originated within this amazing city (such as fortune cookies, Irish Coffee, and more.

During your tour, learn about the science behind sourdough and why a flawless “starter,” or mother dough, is imperative for a successful loaf. Visitors are able to hold a jar of a sample of the mother dough (which is over 100 years old!) and see it for themselves. Guests may also enjoy delicious free samples of freshly-baked bread, and wander the self-guided walkway to observe the bakers, their ovens and special machines specifically for this fascinating culinary art. At the end of the tour, take a fun quiz to discover your “bread type,” and venture into the attached cafe for a delicious gourmet meal.

For those preferring to tour the facility themselves, enjoy dozens of displays, and open windows, with museum-quality designs and an abundance of information about the city, sourdough history and step-by-step explanations of how the loaves are created. Enjoy a history lesson while observing the factory in-action (which makes over twelve thousand loaves each day). For a unique experience and a small additional fee, join the apprentice program… become an apprentice baker and temporarily join the team to make your own loaf of sourdough bread to take home to friends/family. Enroll kids in a special program where they can also be apprentice bakers and make unique teddy bear or sea turtle shaped loaves.

Don’t forget to stop by the Boudin gift shop for unique gifts for the family, and step into the cafe (restaurant and bar) for delicious, fresh meals featuring the baked bread you observed in the factory.
